Guide

How to use this estimate

How the primer calculator works

This calculator estimates primer quantity from surface area, number of primer coats, primer coverage, and optional waste allowance. In imperial mode, enter area in square feet and coverage in square feet per US gallon. In metric mode, enter area in square meters and coverage in square meters per liter.

Primer is calculated separately from paint because primer coverage and coat needs can differ from finish paint. Bare drywall, patched areas, porous surfaces, stains, and strong color changes may need more primer than a simple repaint project.

What to measure

Enter the total surface area you plan to prime. If you already calculated wall area, ceiling area, or another surface area, you can enter that number directly.

Enter the number of primer coats and the coverage value from the primer label. Use square feet per US gallon in imperial mode, or square meters per liter in metric mode.

Example primer calculation

  1. Surface area: 360 square feet
  2. Primer coats: 1
  3. Coverage: 350 square feet per US gallon
  4. Waste allowance: 10%
  5. Primer estimate: (360 × 1 ÷ 350) × 1.10

Estimated primer needed: 1.13 gallons, equivalent to about 4.28 liters.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using paint coverage when the primer product has a different coverage rating.
  • Forgetting extra primer for patched, stained, porous, or bare drywall surfaces.
  • Mixing square feet per gallon with metric mode, or square meters per liter with imperial mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is primer calculated the same way as paint?

The basic quantity formula is similar, but primer can have different coverage and coat requirements. That is why primer should be estimated separately from finish paint.

Where do I find primer coverage?

Primer coverage is usually printed on the primer can or product listing. It can vary by brand, surface texture, porosity, stains, and application method.

Do I always need primer before painting?

Not always. Primer is commonly used on bare drywall, patched areas, stained surfaces, porous surfaces, or major color changes. Follow the paint or primer manufacturer's guidance for your surface.
