How to use this estimate

How the flooring pack calculator works

This calculator adds any waste allowance to your floor area, divides the adjusted area by the coverage per flooring pack, and rounds up to a full number of packs.

It also shows the total covered area after rounding up, which helps explain why the final purchased coverage may be slightly higher than the measured floor area.

What to measure

Measure the floor area of the room or project. If you do not know it yet, use the Room Area Calculator first.

Check the flooring box or product listing for coverage per pack. Enter that coverage in the same unit system you are using for the floor area.

Example flooring pack calculation

  1. Floor area: 120 square feet
  2. Pack coverage: 20 square feet
  3. Waste allowance: 10%
  4. Adjusted area: 132 square feet
  5. Packs needed: 132 ÷ 20, rounded up

Estimated flooring needed: 7 packs.

  • Ignoring waste for cuts, layout direction, and future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find pack coverage?

Pack coverage is usually printed on the flooring box or listed on the product page. It tells you how much area one full pack covers.

Should I buy exactly the calculated number of packs?

Use the result as a planning estimate. For expensive flooring or unusual layouts, confirm with the installer or supplier.

Is this the same as the tile calculator?

No. This calculator works from coverage per pack. The tile calculator works from individual tile dimensions and optional tiles per box.
