How to use this estimate
How the tile calculator works
This calculator divides the area to be tiled by the area of one tile, then rounds up to whole tiles. If you enter a waste allowance, it adds that extra percentage before rounding.
If you enter tiles per box, the calculator also estimates how many boxes the tile count represents. Because boxes cannot usually be bought in fractions, round the box estimate up when purchasing.
What to measure
Measure the total floor or wall area you want to tile. Then measure or read the tile length and tile width from the product listing.
If the listing says how many tiles are in one box, enter that number to estimate boxes too.
Example tile calculation
- Area to tile: 120 square feet
- Tile size: 2 feet × 1 foot
- Tile area: 2 square feet
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Adjusted area: 132 square feet
- Tiles needed: 132 ÷ 2

- Entering tile size in inches while the calculator is set to feet.
- Forgetting waste for cuts and broken tiles.

Frequently asked questions
How much tile waste should I allow?
Simple layouts may use a smaller allowance, while diagonal layouts, small rooms, and complex cuts may need more. The calculator lets you enter the percentage you want to use.
Can I use this for wall tiles?
Yes. Enter the wall area as the area to tile and enter the tile dimensions.
Why does the box result show a decimal?
The decimal shows the exact box equivalent. When buying, round up to the next full box.
