Guide

How to use this estimate

How the gravel calculator works

This calculator multiplies length, width, and depth to estimate the gravel volume for a simple rectangular area. In imperial mode, length and width are entered in feet, depth is entered in inches, and the primary result is shown in cubic yards.

The calculator stays volume-only because gravel weight depends on gravel type, density, moisture, and compaction. To convert the result into bags or tons, use the coverage, bag volume, or density listed by your supplier.

What to measure

Measure the length and width of the area where gravel will be placed. Then enter the planned gravel depth. For imperial mode, enter depth in inches. For metric mode, enter depth in centimeters.

Use the waste allowance if the ground is uneven, the area has small variations, or you want an ordering margin. The result is the gravel volume to use when checking supplier guidance for bags, bulk loads, or weight conversions.

Example gravel calculation

  1. Area size: 12 feet × 8 feet
  2. Depth: 3 inches, which is 0.25 feet
  3. Base volume: 12 × 8 × 0.25 = 24 cubic feet
  4. Cubic yards: 24 ÷ 27 = 0.89 cubic yards
  5. With 10% waste: 0.89 × 1.10 = 0.98 cubic yards

Estimated gravel needed with waste allowance: 0.98 cubic yards, equivalent to about 0.75 cubic meters.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering gravel depth in feet when the calculator expects inches in imperial mode.
  • Assuming every gravel type has the same weight per cubic yard.
  • Using a bag weight as bag coverage without checking the listed volume or yield.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this gravel calculator show volume instead of tons?

Gravel tons depend on material density, stone size, moisture, and compaction. Without asking for those values, a ton estimate would require an assumption. This calculator gives the safer unit-agnostic quantity: volume.

How do I convert gravel volume into bags or tons?

Check your supplier's listed bag volume, coverage, or density. For bags, divide the required volume by the volume covered by one bag. For tons, use the supplier's density or conversion guidance for that exact gravel product.

Should I include waste allowance for gravel?

A small allowance can help when the ground is uneven, depth varies across the area, or you want an ordering margin. The calculator lets you enter waste allowance separately so it is visible instead of hidden.
