Guide
How to use this estimate
How the tile adhesive calculator works
This calculator adds any waste allowance to your tiled area, divides the adjusted area by the coverage per adhesive bag, and rounds up to a full number of bags.
It does not assume bag weight, adhesive density, trowel notch size, or bed thickness. The coverage per bag should come from the adhesive bag, product listing, or manufacturer guidance.
What to measure
Enter the total tiled area where adhesive will be used. Then enter the coverage printed on your adhesive bag or product listing.
Coverage can vary by adhesive type, tile size, trowel notch, substrate flatness, back-buttering, and bed thickness, so use the manufacturer coverage value whenever possible.
Example tile adhesive calculation
- Tiled area: 120 square feet
- Coverage per bag: 30 square feet
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Adjusted area: 120 × 1.10 = 132 square feet
- Bags needed: 132 ÷ 30 = 4.4
- Round up to a full bag
Estimated tile adhesive needed: 5 bags.
Quick reference
| Item | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Basic formula | Adjusted area ÷ coverage per bag | The result is rounded up to full bags. |
| Coverage source | Bag or product listing | Do not guess adhesive coverage if manufacturer coverage is available. |
| Result type | Bags | Bag count is not converted between imperial and metric. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using bag weight instead of coverage per bag.
- Forgetting that trowel notch size can change adhesive coverage.
- Expecting the calculator to convert bag count into another unit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this calculator ask for coverage per bag?
Because adhesive coverage varies by product, tile size, trowel notch, substrate condition, and bed thickness. Using the printed coverage per bag avoids guessing.
Do I need to enter bag weight?
No. This V1 calculator uses coverage per bag, so bag weight is not needed. Enter the area one bag covers, as shown on the adhesive bag or product listing.
Why is there no imperial or metric equivalent result?
The result is a pure bag count. Five bags is still five bags in either unit system, so the calculator does not show a duplicate equivalent result.
